Description
This fragment of chinoiserie wallpaper came from Montpelier, the mansion Major General Henry Knox built in Thomaston, Maine in 1794. The paper was probably purchased from the Boston merchant Moses Grant, based on Knox's financial records at the Maine Historical Society. It is similar to the chinoiserie wallpaper roll illustrated on the billhead of Appleton Prentiss, a Boston paper stainer, but can not definitely be attributed to them as U.S. paper stainers often copied each other's products as well as European wallpapers.
