The General Henry Knox Museum

Description

Pictured is a mahogany wardrobe with cedar drawers made for General Henry Knox, ca. 1790.

Isaac Nichols, a New York cabinetmaker, probably made the wardrobe that was among the furnishings Knox brought to Montpelier, his mansion in Thomaston.

When Montpelier passed out of the family in 1854 the wardrobe was sold at auction to a local family, and was eventually donated to Montpelier, the General Henry Knox Museum, in the 1950s.

The drawer pulls have been replaced; the originals would have been of brass.
